The Bonneville Salt Flats cover approximately 30,000 acres of land in northwest Utah.  It’s like landing on another planet when you arrive. Miles and miles of salt covered dry lake bed.  When the sun is shining, better have your sunglasses on…it’s real bright.

Desolate, quiet and stunning; this place is certainly a feast for the eyes.  This is the third time we have visited, but the first time we have camped.  Camping out here was on my “to do” list while out on this leg of our adventure.  There is something unique about being out here, it’s otherworldly.

If you get the chance, it’s much more fun to drive out onto the salt and put the pedal to the metal, but be sure to visit a car wash as soon as possible…salt and cars do not mix.

To clarify, we didn’t actually camp out on the salt, that’s not allowed, we were camped about a mile away on BLM Land…check out our post here.  (Stay tuned for a future post on the apps we use to find places to camp.)

*Friendly tip: Don’t just drive through, you can have a more fulfilling travel adventure if you stop and stay a while.
